The Good Friends by Margery Bianco, 1934
An animal story with a very original plot. A farmer has been taken ill and his animals decide to shift for themselves at the farm, rather than separate and visit the neighbors. Then the S.P.C.A. interferes, and a neighbor's grandchild puts her oar in and rescues them. Although the animals are humanized to some extent, it is not in any sense the "bedtime story" type of thing, but seems very natural and amusing and just as it should be.
