From Goodreads:
It was originally written in 1947 by Louis Bromfield, an American author, conservationist and Pulitzer prize winner. This was one of his later fiction books. The story focuses on a group of people, the Meaney family, a singer (Mademoiselle) and her guardian, the Professor and others in the rough and tumble wild west city of Silver City, Colorado. The Meaney's, led by patriarch, PJ, run Silver City and even to a great extent Colorado and over the years have made many enemies. Their youngest son, Dick, who had been sent to England for an education, returns home to this situation after many years away and is accompanied by his tutor. The story focuses on the budding romance between Dick and Mademoiselle (a young opera singer) and also the relationships within the family and community. It's a typical western in many ways but I enjoyed the way it was written and overall, enjoyed the pace of the story and the characters involved. Worth reading if you are a Western fan or a fan of the early US.
